History of money: United States
From the first coins to today – and where to find coin dealers.
In colonial America, Spanish silver dollars were the most common coins. The Coinage Act of 1792 created the US Mint in Philadelphia and a decimal dollar of 100 cents – long before most of Europe went decimal.
The 19th century brought gold rushes, new mints in places such as San Francisco, Denver and New Orleans, and classics like the Morgan silver dollar (1878–1904 and 1921). In 1933 gold coins were withdrawn from circulation, and in 1965 silver was removed from dimes and quarters.
Today the US Mint issues the American Eagle bullion coins (since 1986) and many commemoratives; the 50 State Quarters (1999–2008) made millions of people collectors. Mint marks such as P, D, S and CC are key to the value of many US coins.
