1967: The Krugerrand

South Africa launches the Krugerrand – the first modern bullion coin containing exactly one ounce of fine gold.

In 1967, South Africa began minting the Krugerrand to market its gold. It contains one troy ounce of fine gold, alloyed with copper to 22 carat for durability, and shows Paul Kruger and a springbok antelope.

The Krugerrand made gold ownership easy for private investors and inspired the Canadian Maple Leaf, the American Eagle and many others. Bullion coins like these trade close to their gold value; a few early years and special proof issues carry collector premiums.
