1486: The Guldiner of Tyrol
In Hall in Tyrol, Archduke Sigismund strikes a large silver coin worth a gold guilder – the ancestor of the thaler.
Silver from the mines of Schwaz made Tyrol rich. In 1486, the mint of Hall struck the Guldiner, a silver coin of about 31 grams that was worth as much as a gold guilder. For the first time, a large value could be paid in silver.
The Guldiner is considered the first 'large silver coin' and the forerunner of the thaler. Originals from 1486 are rare and expensive; later restrikes exist and should not be confused with them.
