1873: The German mark
The new German Empire replaces thalers and gulden with the mark on the gold standard.
After unification in 1871, Germany still had many regional currencies. The Coinage Act of 1873 introduced the mark of 100 pfennig, backed by gold; it became the sole currency in 1876, replacing thalers, gulden and kreuzer.
Imperial German coins – especially gold 10- and 20-mark pieces from the different German states and silver 2-, 3- and 5-mark coins – are a huge collecting field. Value depends strongly on the issuing state, year, mint letter (A to J) and condition.
