Rare coins worth money

Lists of 'coins worth thousands' are everywhere – and most coins on them are only valuable in perfect condition or with a specific mint mark. Here is what actually makes a coin rare.

Low mintage – and low survival

A coin is scarce when few were made or few survive. Coins melted down, lost or worn out disappear from the market. That's why some old coins with large mintages are cheap, and some modern coins with tiny mintages are not.

Key dates and mint marks

Within almost every series, a handful of year and mint combinations are scarce. Collectors who want a complete set must buy them – which pushes the price up. Check the mint mark carefully.

Mint errors

Double strikes, off-centre strikes, coins struck on the wrong metal blank and doubled dies can be valuable. Damage after the coin left the mint is not an error and is worth nothing extra.

Precious metal

Gold and silver coins have a value floor set by their metal content. Bullion coins such as the Krugerrand, Maple Leaf or Vreneli usually trade close to their metal value plus a premium.

Condition rarity

A common coin can be rare in top condition. Uncirculated pieces with original lustre and high grades from PCGS or NGC sometimes sell for many times the price of an ordinary specimen.

Famous examples

The 1933 Double Eagle, a US 20-dollar gold coin that was never officially released, sold at Sotheby's in 2021 for 18.9 million dollars – one of the highest prices ever paid for a coin. Coins like this are museum pieces; the coin in your drawer is very unlikely to be one, but an estimate tells you quickly.

Frequently asked questions

Are 2-euro commemorative coins valuable?

Almost all are worth face value. A few issues with very small mintages, such as Monaco's, trade above face value – in uncirculated condition.

Is a coin with a mistake worth money?

Only if the error happened at the mint. Scratches, holes or bends that happened later reduce the value.
