History of money: Austria

From the first coins to today – and where to find coin dealers.

The Habsburg lands were a powerhouse of coinage: the Guldiner of Hall in Tyrol (1486) was the ancestor of the thaler, and the Maria Theresa thaler, dated 1780, became one of the most widely used trade coins in the world – it is still restruck today with that date.

In 1892 Austria-Hungary replaced the gulden with the krone. After the First World War and severe inflation, the Republic introduced the schilling in 1925. From 1938 to 1945 the Reichsmark was used; the schilling returned in 1945 and lasted until the euro.

Austria adopted the euro in 2002 (13.7603 schillings per euro). The Austrian Mint in Vienna is known worldwide for the Vienna Philharmonic bullion coin, issued since 1989, and for its official restrikes of historic gold ducats and crowns – collectors should know the difference between originals and restrikes.
